Calculate Running Mileage

Calculate Running Mileage

Without some sort of GPS watch to record your runs, calculating your mileage is nothing more than a guess. However, the Internet provides you with an easy way to figure out the length of your workout after the fact. Just log on to mapmyrun.com so you can record your distance in a running log.

Instructions

1. Go to mapmyrun.com and click on "Start Mapping." From there, you either can create an login so the site remembers your settings and routes in the future, or you can skip ahead by hitting "Close Window."

2. Type the area code or city in which you ran in the "Jump To" box at the top of the page and press "Go."

3. Zoom in or out or move around the screen using the tools on the left side until you locate your starting point. You also can drag the screen in any direction by holding down the left button on your mouse as you move around.

4. Click on the green start marker on the right side of the screen, then click on your starting point on the map to place it there.

5. Click on the map to draw your route. The red path will be made up only of straight lines, so make sure you click often to create turns. If you ran only on roads, put a checkmark in the box next to "Follow Roads" on the right side of the screen. That will allow you to click only where you turned to create your route; the website will do the rest.

If you erred as you created the path, hit the "Undo" button on the right side of the screen to go back a step. To start over, hit the "Clear" button. The mileage counter under "Info & Tools" will increase as you complete your route, and numbered markers will appear on your route at each mile.

6. Click on the "End" marker on the right side of the screen when you have finished mapping your route and place the stop sign at that point on the map. Your final mileage will appear under "Info & Tools."
