1. Locate a custom shoe store. A custom shoe store can take detailed measurements of your feet. The sales associate will determine your shoe size, the mechanics of how you stand, walk and run, and your expectations from a running shoe. If you can't locate a physical store, you can visit a number of online stores that can walk you through the measurements they need to build your running shoes.
2. Research and buy insoles. Go to your local shoe store and research the various kinds of insoles/inserts that are available for runners. Insoles can help alleviate foot discomfort and change your negative running experience into a positive one.
3. Meet with your podiatrist. A podiatrist is a specialized doctor who deals with foot pain. You and the podiatrist can discuss your foot discomfort and the doctor can make recommendations and prescribe orthotics especially made for you.
