Big nonprofit events require corporate sponsors in order to be successful. Recruiting for these sponsorships can be as challenging as they are rewarding. Good marketing, volunteers and word of mouth bring in the dollars a nonprofit event requires. Knowing put all of it together means bigger successes year after year.


Instructions


1. Contact the local chamber of commerce to receive a list of member businesses. Inquire about getting a free advertising spot in their monthly newsletter to help get the word out.


2. Round up the volunteers and go over the business list to identify contacts within a company. Having an employee to contact inside gives you a better chance at gaining a sponsorship.


3. Create a professional media kit that clearly outlines the sponsorship opportunities and the benefits a business receives. Outline the path of donations received along with potential corporate tax breaks.


4. Contact each target corporation by snail mail, phone and in person if necessary. Ask for referrals from every company you communicate with, even if they don't sponsor the event. Having a name opens doors quickly allowing you to cover more ground.


5. Visit the websites of local businesses, which often contain information about employee or corporate participation in nonprofit events. Many corporations have dedicated personnel to organize employees for volunteer work or individual sponsorships. Contact the people directly to get around any corporate confusion.


6. Discuss your past successes when pitching to new businesses and provide referrals from happy participants. Encourage competition with other local businesses such as providing the most volunteers or collected donations.
