Clothes
Donating clothing you no longer wear is an admirable use of your time. You will feel good knowing that needy families can get good use out of your old clothes. It takes a little bit of your time to go through your clothing and prepare it for donating, but it is well worth the effort. You can even get a receipt for your donation, which will benefit you come tax time.
Instructions
1. Go through your clothes. Remove items that have stains, holes or rips; donate only clothes in good enough condition that even you would buy them. Check to see if you have any shoes that are in good condition as well as coats, hats, scarves and gloves. Most thrift stores also accept bracelets, rings and necklaces.
2. Fold your clothes and pack them in a box. When packing shoes and socks, make sure you keep them in pairs; shoe laces can be tied together, and socks can be folded down over each other. If you do not have boxes and plan on donating the clothes in person, you can place the folded clothes in a shopping bag.
3. Itemize in a notebook what you are packing for donation. You need only do this if you are requesting a tax receipt. Clothing donations are tax deductible.
4. Place a sticky label on each of the boxes and bags, noting on the label what is inside. For instance, one bag may read "Children's winter clothing, size 5T."
5. Take your clothing to donation bins set up by the Salvation Army if you don't need a receipt for them. These bins are usually located near shopping plazas and grocery stores.
6. Take your old clothing to a thrift store and have the clerk give you a receipt for your taxes. Or take your clothes to your local Salvation Army or Goodwill store, requesting a tax receipt if desired. The Salvation Army may also be willing to pick up your items if you have a large amount of clothing to donate.
7. Mail your clothing to the nearest Salvation Army facility. If you do this, include a self-addressed, stamped envelope so you can be sent a tax receipt. Keep your postage receipt because it is tax deductible as well.
