Some colleges offer hundreds of majors, but increased specialization can make these programs unattractive to students with broad or unconventional interests. Fortunately, some colleges have created programs that allow students to create their own, unique major. Usually there are only two requirements: the college doesn't already offer that major (you can't major in your own version of physics) and you need an advising professor to support your program of study.
Instructions
Before College
1. Plan what you want to study. You need to have at least some idea to find a program that meets your needs.
2. Check other programs to make sure creating a unique major is your only option. In particular look at 'studies' programs (American Studies or International Studies), dual majors and specialized programs. Search the Internet, consult college guides and ask admissions officers.
3. Apply to colleges with programs that allow you to create your own major if nothing else works. Sometimes you can apply directly to the interdisciplinary program, but other schools only allow applications for individualized majors after a year or two of study.
4. Choose the program that best enables you to create your unique major.
After Acceptance
5. Begin exploring your academic interests. Adapt to your changing ideas.
6. Take courses toward your goal. Be sure to take the necessary introductory courses for advanced study.
7. Revise your plan along the way, as needed.
8. Complete your program with a thesis or internship that combines your areas of study.
