With most sperm donations being anonymous, it is not an easy task to find your donor. You can maximize your chances by following a few steps. Remember this can be a very emotional process and it is ok to feel a variety of emotions along the way. Whether you are the parent of a donor conceived child or the child him/herself, I wish you the best of luck in your search!
Instructions
1. Gather as much information as possible. The doctor, the clinic used, the donor #, donor description? Was he a student at a nearby college? Do you know how long he donated? Where did he donate? A sperm bank? A Doctor's office? You can not have too much information.
2. If you are the donor offspring and over the age of 18, contact the sperm bank directly. Ask them if they are willing to contact the donor with your information to see if he is willing to have contact with you. Be respectful. This was done anonymously and they are under no obligation to do this. However, you may get lucky however and they may be willing to try to establish contact. Try to get as much information about him as possible. See if you can determine how many other offspring were born via his donations. If you aren't successful with the first call, try again a few weeks later or a few months later. Policies change. You can also try writing a letter with your contact information and asking if they will contact the donor or place your contact infor in his file in case he contacts the bank at a later date.
3. Register with an online registry. www.donoroffspringmatches.com is a free site where you can register your information. It is all done on a voluntary basis. You have the chance of meeting 1/2 siblings and/or the donor himself. Check in regularly for added entries. Make sure to keep your contact info up to date so you can be contacted with a match!
4. Find support. This is an emotional time. DOM has a community forum for discussion. Do a search for donor discussion groups. There are several support groups out there.
