Carry Both Backpack & Laptop Bags

Carry a backpack and laptop bag correctly to avoid back pain

Wearing a bag with heavy contents can cause strain on your neck and back. Whether you are a student or a worker, knowing the safest way to carry a heavy bag will help you in the long run and keep you from developing back or shoulder pain.

Instructions

1. Select a backpack that has padded straps that go over the shoulder. If you can locate a backpack with a metal frame, this will give you more support. Try a backpack with a waist belt, which helps evenly distribute the weight. This belt helps to push some of the weight on the hips, which is a stronger part of the body, so it is better able to sustain the weight.

2. Pack the bag so the books are centered in the middle of the bag and secured so they do not shift. Backpacks are the best choice for carrying weight because of their size, which can evenly distribute the weight, making the load easier to carry. A backpack also uses your back and abdominal muscles to carry the weight, which strengthens your core. Consider the style of backpack, the way you wear the backpack and the contents within the backpack as well. A backpack with extra pockets can also help out by distributing the weight. If you can, chose one that follows the contour of your body because that will also help with the weight.

3. Wear the backpack bag on your back. Letting it be slung low on your back will increase lower back pressure and cause immediate pain. Continued weight low on the back might have long-term effects on the spinal column, causing severe damage. If using a laptop bag, wear it like a backpack if possible. Put the most weight on your back and have the center part of the strap down across your chest. Wearing the bag like a purse will shift the weight to one side of the body and in turn cause more pressure on one side.

4. Walk as straight as possible when you have a backpack or laptop bag on your back. Make sure not to slump over or run fast. This will cause the weight to pressure one part of your body and cause possible back problems if done for a long amount of time. Adjust the straps as necessary to make sure the fit is snug and comfortable for you. Consider carrying some of the items in the bag to relieve some of the weight on your back.
