Create A Catchy Name

Dream up a catchy name for your new venture.

When Ritta Dreier started her small business in 1978, she may not have imagined the company would become a household name in Eugene, Oregon. More than 30 years later, Ritta's Burittos' catchy name and consistent quality continue to draw customers who simply can't imagine Saturday Market or the Oregon Country Fair without a visit to the long-time food vendor's booth. When it's time to come up with a name for your own business, club or organization, use language creatively to find a catchy, memorable word combination to make your mark.

Instructions

1. Examine your own first and last name and those of your family for any outstanding features such as double consonants or vowels, multiple syllables and unusual spelling or letter combinations. Experiment with matching the unusual features to business descriptions that have similar word features. Bob and Gil's Bar and Grill, for example, plays on similar syllable structure and the first letters of the owners' names matched to the business description's first letters.

2. Look for rhyming words that blend an owner's name, a common activity or a location with the business or organization's concept. Ritta's Burittos combines Ms. Dreier's name with the main menu item in her food business. A knitting club whose members have a sense of humor may enjoy Knit Wits for their club name, especially if their meeting place is a business called the Yarn Barn.

3. Combine upbeat adjectives and adverbs with a precise descriptive word that defines your organization or business. Quickie's Pizza, for example, implies speedy delivery of a favorite fast food and serves double duty as a slogan for your advertising campaigns.

4. Attach common prefixes and suffixes to ordinary words to invent a name that doesn't have a dictionary definition, but sounds like it might. A shoe store, for example, may become known as Proshoe, Supershoe or Shoe-able.
