Educate The Public About Your Non Profit Organization

Your spokesperson should be well-trained in dealing with the media.

It can be a challenge to educate the public about your nonprofit when there are so many charities to choose from. Educating the public about your non-profit requires a variety of tactics and techniques that get the word out about your nonprofit and the positive impact that you are making. Educating the public about your nonprofit brings in volunteers, employees and, of course, donors.

Instructions

1. Choose a name that explains what you do. Some charities, like the American Red Cross, have names that don't explain what they do. That means they need more time for the public to learn what you do. On the other hand, you know immediately that the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation raises money for breast cancer.

2. Get a spokesperson. A celebrity spokesperson will certainly get your organization in the media quickly, but having one is not necessary. You may not want your organization attached to a celebrity who might spark unwanted controversy. Sometimes the spokesperson is the head of the organization or the publicity director. The most important thing is that your spokesperson is trained properly for media interviews.

3. Do good work. Then publicize it. Once you have created that mentorship program, or that community garden, talk about it. Write a press release, do radio interviews, do local and national television interviews. There are magazines like Yes! Magazine that highlight people and organizations making a difference.

4. Create an online presence. You can assert yourself as an authority on the subject of your organization through social media sites like Twitter. You can also attract and keep the attention of people who are interested in your organization using Facebook and your own website. You can also start your own blog.

5. Build partnerships. You can build partnerships with similar organizations to sponsor events, sit on panels, or form coalitions. Attaching your name to other, more well-known organizations will increase awareness for your organization.

6. Purchase a mailing list. You can purchase mailing lists from other like organizations, and mail fundraising letters to the people on the list. This tactic is popular during the holidays.
