Figure How Fast Your Run Is

Timing your run will motivate you to run faster.

The only way to track your progress if you are a runner is by determining how fast you are running over a certain distance. Whether you are a beginner or you race competitively, it is always a good thing to figure out how fast you are running. Once you have determined your speed, you may want to keep a log of your times so that you can see how much you improve with each run.

Instructions

1. Allow yourself time to warm up and cool down before and after every run.

Start your timer as soon as you start your run and remember to press stop as soon as you finish. It is up to you if you jog a little first or cool down after your official stopping point, but make sure you remember where you started and ended the timer.

2. Having a clear and accurate route is absolutely necessary to determine your speed.

Determine the distance you covered in your run. There are a number of ways to do this.

If you own a GPS system or your wristwatch or cell phone has this technology, then it will be able to tell you exactly how far you ran. Otherwise, mark the route you took on a map and then determine the distance. Google Maps and many specialized websites are really helpful with this.

3. Divide the distance by your time. Speed equals distance divided by time, so as long as you have the numbers, you can calculate an accurate speed. You can choose to enter the distance in miles or kilometers, so there is no need to worry about inaccuracies or converting measurements.
