Compare The Strength Of Trash Bags

Some trash bags resist weight better than others.

There are few things in life more frustrating than having a garbage bag rip just as you are carrying it out of your home. Trash bags are made from various types of plastic, and their strength can vary significantly from brand to brand. If you want to get your money's worth from your trash bags, perform a couple strength tests to see which types of bags hold up best. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Tear Test

1. Open a trash bag and fill with assorted trash. Use trash that you would normally find in your garbage. Vary the shapes, sizes and weights of the trash items that you place in the bag.

2. Tie the bag and lift it into the air for one minute. Watch the bag as it hangs.

3. Note whether the garbage inside the bag punctured the plastic in any locations. Observe the overall appearance of the bag.

4. Record your results. Include specifics about the appearance of the trash bag after 30 seconds and then after one minute. Note whether the thickness of the plastic changed very little, stretched thin, tore or burst.

5. Repeat the process by placing the same trash in bags of other brands.

6. Compare your results among the various brands of trash bags. Note which bags maintained their shape and strength the most and the least. You could even assign scores to the bags as follows: 4 = held its original shape and strength with no stretching or tearing, 3 = mostly held its shape with a little stretching, 2 = stretched noticeably with some tears, and 1 = multiple tears and bursting.

Weight Test

7. Ask someone to hold a garbage bag several inches off the ground. Hold the bag over an area that you don't mind getting wet (such as over a bathtub or outdoors).

8. Pour a gallon of water into the bag and observe any stress on the bag. Note whether the bag stretches, changes shape, tears or bursts.

9. Pour more water into the bag (gallon by gallon) until the bag bursts. Note how many gallons it took for the bag to burst.

10. Perform the test on bags of other brands.

11. Compare your results. The bags with the highest numbers will be the strongest in terms of withstanding weight. The bags with the lowest numbers (fewest gallons of water) will be the weakest.
