When it comes to the body, there are two types of weight: fat weight and lean body weight, also called lean body mass. Your lean body weight is everything in your body other than fat tissue. For example, skin, bones, ligaments, tendons, cartilage and any fluids running through your system all make up your lean body weight. To determine this, you need a couple of tools and a few basic steps.
Instructions
1. Determine your body weight. The first part of the equation has to do with your scale weight. Step on the scale first thing in the morning on an empty stomach to get the most accurate reading. It is also a good idea to wear no clothing.
2. Get an analyzer. Body fat analyzers are convenient tools that are used to determine your body fat percentage. They are a handheld device that has a digital screen that resembles that of a video game. It has two galvanized handles that you hold on to as a painless current of electricity gets sent through your body to determine your body fat percentage.
3. Find out your body fat. The digital screen on the analyzer will ask you a handful of questions such as your age, weight, height, activity level and gender. Put all of this information in, press the handles firmly, extend your arms straight out in front of you and hit the "Start" button. Wait for about seven seconds and then your body fat percentage will appear.
4. Calculate your lean body weight. Now that you have your scale weight and your body fat percentage, you can determine your lean body weight. Take your weight and multiply it by your body fat. This will give you your fat weight. For example, if you are 200 pounds and 10 percent body fat, then you have 20 pounds of fat. Now subtract 20 from 200 to get your lean body weight. In this same example, it is 180 pounds.
5. Keep track. If you are goal oriented and you want to stay at a certain body mass or body fat percentage, then progressively track your results. Write down the date, time and all the information you collected to determine your lean body weight, then check it again every four weeks.
