Determine A Percentage Difference

A calculator helps figure percentage difference.

The percentage difference is a math formula used to calculate the relative difference between two quantities when neither has more significance or chronological relevance. For example, if you want to compare the difference between the weight of two people, neither weight is more significant nor did either weight come first. Measuring the difference as a percent gives context to the difference. For example, a 20 lb. difference between a 290 lb. person and a 310 lb. person is not as significant as a 20 lb. difference between one baby weighing 10 lbs. and another weighing 30 lbs.

Instructions

1. Subtract the smaller number from the larger number to find the difference. For example, if your two numbers are 45 and 39, subtract 39 from 45 to get 6.

2. Add the two numbers together and divide by two to find the average of the two numbers. In this example, add 39 plus 45 to get 84 and divide 84 by 2 to find that the average equals 42.

3. Divide the difference by the average to find the difference as a decimal. In this example, divide 6 by 42 to get 0.1428.

4. Multiply the decimal by 100 to convert to a percentage. Completing the example, multiply 0.1428 by 100 to get 14.28 percent.
