Donate your well taken care of clothing to charities in Massachusetts.
When you donate clothing to charity in Massachusetts it is used in several different ways. Some charities sell your gently-used clothing in their thrift stores and others give your clothing to the less fortunate and underprivileged. Other charities in Massachusetts focus only on providing donated business apparel to those re-entering the workforce for job interviews. Whatever your charity does with your donated clothing you are provided with the benefit of knowing you've done something for the less fortunate as well as a tax deduction.
Instructions
1. Find a charity to donate your clothing to in your Massachusetts neighborhood. If you don't have a favorite charity, you can search for charities using a source such as Charity Navigator, which allows you to search for charities of all types throughout Massachusetts.
2. Find out whether or not your charity is a registered 501(C)3 corporation with the Internal Revenue Service. Only donating clothing to registered 501(C)3 organizations give you the right to claim the deduction on your income tax return.
3. Clean the clothes you plan on donating and then calculate the value of your donation. Only clean, gently-used clothing free of tears, rips and stains are accepted by Massachusetts charities.
4. Contact your chosen charity to inquire about drop off locations, potential pick up services and office hours. If you donate afterhours in a drop box you will not receive a donation receipt from your charity, which you need for your personal tax records.
5. Drop off your donation or schedule a pick up time for your donation. Obtain your tax receipt from the charity and keep it for your records.
