Cope With Being A Military Wife

It's never easy to cope with the absence of a loved one, especially a husband or wife. This goes double for wives whose husbands are engaged in military service. Long stretches of time alone, uncertainty about future moves or deployments, and the responsibilities of raising a family can weigh heavily on a military wife. It's essential to develop coping mechanisms and support systems to help deal with the strain of being a military wife.

Instructions

1. Maintain normality. When your husband is deployed, stay on top of your responsibilities, as you would if he were around. Keep a regular schedule. It's impossible to pretend that life is normal or desirable without your husband at home. However, keeping to a schedule and living life as normal as possible can help regulate your emotional state.

2. Stay active. Participate in local clubs and activities. Get regular exercise. Take classes. When you are called upon to move to another city or country, get involved in your new community as soon as possible. Don't be afraid to make new friends and have new experiences. Take full advantage of the resources at your disposal.

3. Communicate with your husband when he is away. Send him letters, emails, video recordings of you and your children, care packages and cards. Read the same book together with your husband and talk about it over email. Set up long-distance date nights where you watch the same movie and talk about it over the Internet or phone.

4. Get involved with other military wives. In addition to the local community of military wives and families where you are stationed, there are several good online forums like Militarywives.com. Share your joys and heartaches with them.
