Cope With A Spouse'S Deployment

The life of a military spouse can be quite challenging. Not only do you have to cope with frequent moves and constant uncertainty, you may also have to deal with frequent deployments. Quite often these deployments are to dangerous places, and that can be difficult to deal with. Fortunately, you have options to help you get through this difficult time.

Instructions

1. Visit a military counselor. Counselors on military bases and posts are skilled in helping people cope with deployments. Not only can they be an excellent sounding board, but they can also give you tips on relieve stress.

2. If you are not already working, consider finding a job. This will give you some disposable income and help you get out of the house and meet people. A job can also give you a sense of control during a time in which you may feel you do not have a lot of control over your life.

3. Volunteer locally or elsewhere. Consider volunteering for your local Habitat for Humanity or even volunteering internationally with a relief agency in another country.

4. Teach English abroad. If you are the adventurous type and your spouse concurs, you can consider using this time to have an adventure. While this is not for everyone, an assignment teaching English in another country can be an exciting adventure in an otherwise unexciting and upsetting time.

5. If you have not completed your education, this is an excellent time to do so. If you've already completed an undergraduate degree, consider a graduate degree. Not only will this help you deal with your spouse's deployment, but it will improve your career marketability and give you a sense of accomplishment during a difficult time.

6. Join a support group. Most military bases and posts have support groups for spouses of deployed service members. These groups can be an invaluable support system with a group of people who are able to understand the difficulties you are facing.

7. Get in shape. Use this time to focus on your physical fitness and health. Many people like to set a goal such as running a half marathon or a full marathon. This will give you a sense of accomplishment, increase your self-esteem and give you something to surprise your returning spouse with.

8. Redecorate your home. Are you sick of living in a white-walled apartment or base housing? Use this time to beautify your surroundings. This will not only give you a project to keep you busy, but it will also help to relieve stress and sadness to live in a more uplifting environment.
