Design Your Own Nurse Scrubs

Nursing scrubs do not have to be uniform and one color.

Nurse scrubs are required attire for medical professionals in hospitals and doctor's offices. They can be worn in plain white, in a single color like blue or pink or even in patterns. Whichever you choose, scrubs don't have to be boring uniforms. With a little creativity and a little time, a boring pair of scrubs can be dressed up and turned into festive attire.

Instructions

1. Unique scrubs reflect unique personalities.

Check your workplace regulations or employee handbook to ensure that unique colors and patterns on scrubs are allowed in the workplace. This will provide parameters for what will be allowed on your scrubs, and will save you time and effort.

2. Envision what your dream scrubs will look like.

Decide what you want your scrubs to look like. Do you want one color? Do you want patterns? Do you want embroidery? This is the time to make decisions and pick a design before starting the artistic process.

3. Scrubs can be painted a variety of colors and designs.

For painted scrubs, pull out your paint brush and a variety of fabric paints. You can paint your scrubs in long or short strokes, and use one or many colors. This is a good opportunity to paint on patterns like peace signs, happy faces or flowers.

Painted patterns show up nicely on plain white scrubs, and you can use a wide variety of paint colors to create designs. Though you can also paint colored scrubs, it is important to remember that the color of the paint will mix with the color of the scrubs, so this should be taken into consideration when developing your design. For example, yellow paint on blue scrubs will create a greenish pattern.

Once you have painted your scrubs, lay them on a flat surface to dry for at least four to six hours so the pattern will set. Allowing scrubs to dry overnight is perfectly acceptable.

4. Scrubs can be dyed or painted.

For dyed scrubs, fill a wash basin with one gallon of water and 4 ounces of fabric dye. Dip scrubs into the wash basin until saturated with dye. To create patterns, scrubs can be squeezed tightly while saturated with the dye and water mixture, which will create texture in the color. Scrubs can be "tie dyed" by tying off portions of the scrub with string or rope to create patterns. Let the dye settle into the fabric for at least four hours before rinsing the finished product in a wash basin with warm water.

5. Scrubs can be embroidered by hand or with a sewing machine.

For a smaller pattern, you may wish to embroider your scrubs. Scrubs can be embroidered by hand or with a sewing machine. Many sewing machines offer a variety of patterns to use for creating a beautiful embroidered garment, or one can create their own design by stitching letters, flowers or other simple designs.
