Develop Mental Focus

You can develop mental focus with practice.


Mental focus and concentration helps in a variety of ways, from reading an engrossing novel to an in-depth conversation with our spouse, to watching an edge-of-your-seat movie or an intense football game. Sometimes, though, we lose our mental focus due to other things that pull at our attention. You can improve and develop your mental focus, through organizing your environment and following a few simple tips.

1. Organize your study area to help you develop mental focus in school. Arrange supplies, if needed. You will not need these items to develop mental focus for day to day activities that are not school-related. Make sure your study environment has a comfort level that works for you. Consider lighting, placement of your chair, noise level and posture.


2. Train your mind to concentrate on the here and now. Whenever you catch yourself not concentrating, remind yourself to pay attention to what you are doing. You can do this using a little phrase like, "Be here now." You may have to repeat this more often initially as you train yourself to develop mental focus. Patience and persistence will help you learn to concentrate.


3. Remember the spider technique. If you hold a vibrating tuning fork close to a spider web, the spider will search to see why the web is vibrating. But after a few times, the spider realizes there is not an insect in its web and does not pay attention. You can train yourself to do that. Tune out distractions, like slamming doors and people coming and going. Focus on the subject at hand. Practice this in settings such as lectures or in conversations.


4. Set aside a certain time every day to think about things that are bothering you. When you get distracted, make yourself a quick note, if needed. You can refocus on the task at hand, knowing that you will be able to deal with the issue later. According to information provided from Kansas State University, people who set aside a specific time of day to worry find their worry decreasing by 35 percent within about one month.
