Every corporation is required to have a Tax ID number.
Every partnership and corporation that does business is required to have a Tax ID number or TIN. Sometimes called an employer ID number, it is assigned by the Internal Revenue Service to all start-up companies. Nonprofit corporations, which generally do not pay taxes, are also required to have a TIN for business identification purposes. Companies and organizations use their TIN on various forms such as W-2 forms, which are used to report employee wages and withholding taxes, and 1099 forms, used for reporting payments to independent contractors at the end of each tax year.
Instructions
1. Search the EDGAR database, maintained by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). All publicly traded companies and some private companies are required to submit reports to the SEC. The company's TIN usually appears at the top of the first page of these forms.
2. Call the IRS if you are an authorized representative of the corporation for which you are trying to find a TIN. The IRS has established a help desk to assist businesses with this matter. The help desk can be reached at 800-829-4933.
3. Research the corporation in the GuideStar database, if it is a nonprofit entity. GuideStar maintains records of nearly 2 million nonprofit organizations operating domestically. These organizations file Form 990 with the IRS annually and this form is freely available for viewing by the public. The TIN is located on the first page of Form 990.
4. Contact the corporation and ask for their TIN. For nonprofit organizations, the IRS requires that Form 990 be readily available to the public upon request. For regular corporations, the human resources department should be able to provide this number.
