Your employer's Federal Tax ID (EIN) is not difficult to find.
If a business has employees, operates as a corporation/partnership, files employment, excise, or alcohol, tobacco and firearms tax returns, withholds taxes on income to non-resident aliens or has a Keogh plan, an EIN (employer identification number, also known as a federal tax ID) is required in order for the business to be identifiable as its own entity. Employees can easily find this number on their W2 forms and sometimes on their check stubs (company dependent). This number can also be found on a previous tax return.
Instructions
1. Take your W2 form and locate box "b." It will be labeled "Employer ID number (EIN)," or something very similar to that. The number inside will be nine digits long (e.g., 123456789). If you can't find your W2 form or you don't have it yet, continue to Step 2.
2. Take your check stub and locate the nine-digit number labeled "Employer Tax ID" (or something very similar). If you are the employer and need to find your ID number, continue to Step 3.
3. Locate one of your old tax returns. Under the income section (where you list your business income), you will find your Federal Tax ID number.
