Enjoy Marathon Key Florida

Marathon Key, known as heart of the keys, is a large island or key located just a couple of hours south of Miami. Marathon Key is best known for its family friendly activities, natural beauty and pristine Sombrero Beach. Sombrero Reef is a federally protected reef chock full of tropical fish and coral life. Restaurants in Marathon feature locally caught seafood like shrimp, grouper and local Florida lobster.

1. Book a flight to Marathon Airport to avoid the two-hour drive from Miami International Airport. There are several airlines that will expedite you to this vacation destination. During high season in the Florida Keys, the main highway to Marathon can be very congested.


2. Book a hotel room on the Gulf of Mexico side of the Florida Keys. You'll be able to enjoy the bright pink, orange and purple hues of the sunsets from your hotel room.


3. Visit the Dolphin Research Center to swim with dolphins. They are at 8901 Overseas Highway, MM 59, Grassy Key, Fla., 33050. You can call them at 305-289-1121. They also have tours and interactive programs for all ages to learn about their preservation efforts.


4. Book a snorkeling or scuba trip through your hotel or one of the diving charters to see the various reefs in Marathon. Some of these reefs include Adelaide Baker, Sombrero Reef, Coffin's Patch, Delta Shoals and The Thunderbolt.


5. Hire a professional fishing guide to take you on tours of the back country water to fish. These guides can cost from $200 to $500 per half-day trip.
