Fertilize A Lawn Before Rain

Lawns are just like many other garden plants in that they need fertilizer to look their best. Where you live you will determine whether warm-season grass, cool-season grass or a mix of both is appropriate. When fertilizing a lawn it's important to water afterward so the fertilizer soaks down to the lawn's roots. Rain can help soak the fertilizer into the roots just as readily as sprinklers can. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

1. Check the forecast to be sure there is going to be rain at least one hour or so before applying fertilizer. If no rain is expected in that time frame, the lawn can be watered manually after the fertilizer is spread.

2. Apply 1 to 2 lbs. of 16-4-8 fertilizer for every 1,000 square feet to a warm-season grass lawn in the spring or summer. Sprinkle the fertilizer over the lawn evenly before it rains or use a fertilizer applicator such as a broadcast spreader.

3. Apply 5 to 6 lbs. of 16-4-8 fertilizer for every 1,000 square feet of cool-season lawn in the late summer and fall. Sprinkle the fertilizer over the lawn evenly or use a fertilizer applicator. Spread the fertilizer before the rain.

4. Water the lawn for 5 to 10 minutes with a lawn sprinklers if the rain does not come or if the rain is only a light mist. Ensure the lawn receives at least 1 inch of water.
