Find A Company'S Federal Tax Identification Number

A company's federal tax identification number is assigned by the IRS.

The Internal Revenue Service assigns a federal tax identification number to companies for the purposes of reporting taxes. The federal tax identification number is similar to an individual's Social Security number. Companies, such as corporations and partnerships, are required to obtain a tax ID number. Nonprofit organizations are also required to obtain a tax ID number. You can find out the number for a company in a variety of ways.

Instructions

1. Access the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission's online database and search for the company's federal tax identification number. The online database of the Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval (EDGAR) system contains filing information for numerous companies. Search for the company by name and select it from the list of results. Select a filing to view and locate the federal tax ID number. It is listed as "IRS No." for most filings.

2. Contact the company directly and request the federal tax identification number. The accounting or payroll department should be able to provide you with the number.

3. Access GuideStar's online database and search for the company's tax ID number. GuideStar stores the federal tax ID number for nonprofit organizations. Although the database is free to use, you must create an account.
