Dress For Running

While running shoes continue to be the most important piece of athletic equipment for a runner, some consideration must still be paid to what you put on the rest of your body. Dress yourself in proper running attire to have a more comfortable run.

Instructions

1. Consider what the conditions of the road are going to be for your run. A trail run will require different equipment than your daily run through the neighborhood. The kind of weather expected during your run should also effect what kind of clothing choices you make.

2. Start from the ground up by selecting running shoes which fit your feet. A proper running shoe should provide ample arch support and address any pronation of the foot you may have. Your toes should be able to wiggle freely without your foot slipping in and out of the shoe.

3. Invest in a pair of thick cotton socks that will absorb moisture as you run. Whatever socks you select, take them with you to try on new running shoes to make sure they fit properly.

4. Invest in supportive foundation garments such as a properly fitting sports bra for women and athletic briefs for men.

5. Watch out for clothing that is too loose and may chafe as you run. Shorts and t-shirts that fit closer to the body are generally easier to move in and may help keep your body cool as you run.

6. Dress in light-colored clothing, particularly if you like to run in the evening. It is your responsibility to make yourself as visible as possible to motorists and others who share the road with you.

7. Bring along a bottle of water or some kind of hydration system, particularly on longer runs or during the hottest summer months. Hydration is a key component of a healthy, injury-free run.

8. Carry a copy of your personal identification with you in your shoe or in a wrist or waist bag. Having information such as your emergency contact's phone number and your name on your person when you run is important, especially if you run alone.
