Choose A Pair Of Running Shorts

Comfort is key when choosing a pair of running shorts.


Runners generally pay less attention to their choice of running shorts than they do to their running shoes. Though not as important as the right shoe, choosing the right pair of running shorts can be an important part of running in comfort. When buying a pair of running shorts, look for shorts that are gender-specific, are the right fit, and are made of the best lightweight fabric. To ensure quality, look for running shorts from manufacturers that specialize in running apparel.


Instructions


1. Choose running shorts that have an inner brief liner, similar to those in swimming trunks. The inner brief lining adds support, prevents chafing, and enhances comfort. Wearing underwear is unnecessary and not recommended, since most underwear is made of cotton, which absorbs moisture and can lead to chafing. For men, the liner in running shorts offers sufficient support so that a jock strap is unnecessary.


2. Make sure you choose running shorts that are designed specifically for your gender. This is because of the variations in the body size and shape of men and women. The male and female body is shaped differently throughout the waist, hips, and thighs. A good pair of running shorts will be cut to maximize the fit for each gender.


3. Look for running shorts that are made of ultralight polyester, which is breathable and wicks moisture from the skin so that it evaporates. Some fabrics are designed for use in summer heat. They provide breathability and moisture transfer to reduce abrasion. Do not choose running shorts made of cotton or nylon. Both are not capable of wicking moisture and will cause chafing.


4. Decide on a length of running shorts that is suited to your running style and the distances you run. Many runners will wear a shorter pair when running short and fast runs, and longer shorts for long and slow runs. You can choose from a variety of lengths, indicated by the inseam measurement. Lengths start with a 1-inch inseam and extend to 7 inches. Preventing chafing is an important consideration in choosing a length. If your thighs tend to rub together, wear longer shorts to minimize the problem.


5. Choose running shorts that have a small pocket on the inside front of the waistband that can hold a set of keys. The pocket should be large enough to hold a credit card. Some running shorts have a "nutritional pocket" sewn on the back of the shorts that can hold an energy bar or wallet. Whatever the choice, make sure the pocket is sewn close tο the waistband and the shorts have a wide waistband. This will reduce the bouncing of items such as keys when running.
