Choose The Best Walking Shoe

Nike Air Rejuven8 LE and the Teva Toachi

Good walking shoes are the staple equipment of any fitness program. Good walking shoes do not have to be expensive, but must be replaced on a regular basis to avoid injury.

Instructions

1. Choose a shoe that matches your style. Today, walking shoes are available in many styles and colors. Good walking shoes even come in sandal styles. Regardless, while style may be the first thing that begins your selection process, be prepared to compromise style for fit.

2. Identify your arch pattern. Take one sheet of paper for each foot. Mix some colored water based paint (like Crayola) and pour it in a container big enough for you to stand in. Having stepped in the paint, step onto the paper then off onto a waiting paper towel to dry your feet. You should have left your footprints on these pages that you may now take with you to athletic shoe store for help with your shoe selection.

The more of your footprint transferred, the lower your arch. Some people have flat feet which mean your entire foot would leave a complete print. Some footprint patterns require corrective shoe inserts to improve their gait (walking pattern). Only a health practitioner can determine and create the corrective orthotics.

3. Determine your wear pattern. Bring an old pair of walking/running shoes to the store to display if you tend to wear off the inner or outer portion of your shoe heels. This may indicate gait or knee problems that the shoe salespeople can help you correct with the right shoes.

Your old shoe wear pattern can help qualified shoe representatives make suggestions for shoe models that are generically designed to offer support against negative walking impact.

4. Accommodate for foot expansion. Fitness walking tends to increase blood flow and there may even be some pooling of blood to the feet as a result. This can lead to minor swelling in the feet.

5. Don't ignore the socks. Socks help with shoe fit and feel, and also with wear and experience. While walking shoes are made to offer support and shock resistance in key areas, socks add an additional layer of that same protection in addition to addressing foot sliding in the shoe.

Foot sliding is the main reason for blisters and other discomforts of fitness shoes and the walking experience. Some socks also help to keep the feet drier longer, while some are simply too bulky making an otherwise well fitting shoe seem tight.
