Catch A Yellowfin Tuna

Yellowfin tuna is found throughout the waters of the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific and oceans. The meat of this fish is well-coveted due to its tasty, mild flavor. Yellowfin tuna is protein-rich while containing low sodium and low saturated fat; it is also a good source of vitamin B6, thiamin and selenium. Yellowfins can reach a maximum size of almost 8 feet in length and 440 lb. in weight.

Instructions

1. Fish for yellowfin tuna during low light conditions such as dusk and dawn. Yellowfin tuna are sensitive to cooler temperatures and typically prefer waters with temperatures of at least 64 degrees Fahrenheit. According to Fishing Headquarters Tackle and Supply Store in Jupiter, Florida, waters with temperatures of 68 degrees or higher produce higher catch rates.

2. Use live or dead baits such as pilchards, skipjack tuna, mackerel and squid. For artificial lures, use deep diving lures with a wide bib, hard-body minnow lures without bib, skirted lures, poppers, artificial feathers and cedar plugs dipped in fish oil.

3. Create a presentation with multiple lures trolled in the boat. Opt for single hook lures in green adorned with plastic skirts to entice yellowfin tuna. Other productive presentations include chains of lures to increase visibility. A flashy presentation of multiple lures will appear like an enticing school of agitated baitfish to the tuna.

4. Attract the yellowfin tuna by chumming. This method involves showing a baited hook to the fish while your boat is anchored or drifting then tossing pieces of chum in the water around the baited hook. Make your chum by cutting pieces of small bait like silver hake or butterfish.

5. Select heavy duty, 30-, 50- or 80-lb. class rods to adequately handle yellowfin tuna that ranges from 30 to 80 lb. in weight. The heavier the fish, the heavier your tackle should be. Yellowfins that exceed 100 lb. can usually be handled with 80-lb. class gear.
