Calculate Calories Burned Jogging

You can jog almost anywhere, anytime.

Jogging, or slow running, is a great way to lose weight and keep it off. Running, as Amby Burfoot of Runner's World puts it, "is a phenomenal calorie-burning exercise" It's a relatively easy to do, all year-round activity. No costly gym subscription needs to be involved. There are various ways to find out how many calories you burn when jogging; it all depends on how mathematically minded you are as to which method you choose.

Instructions

1. Calculate the amount of calories burned by using data from The Mayo Clinic as a basis. It states that a person weighing 160 pounds will burn 584 calories during an hour jogging, someone weighing 200 pounds will burn 728 and a person weighing 240 pounds will burn 872. That makes it an average of 3.63 calories per pound weighed (584 divided by 160, 728 divided by 200 and 872 divided by 240). Multiply your body weight in pounds by 3.6 to find out how much you would lose by jogging for one hour.

2. Enter your weight and amount of time you jogged into an online calories-burned calculator. It will then return the amount of calories you burned.

3. Multiply your weight in pounds by 0.75 to find out your total calorie burn (TCB) when running. This is the amount of calories you would burn in a mile. However, this total would include your resting metabolic calories -- the amount you would burn off by simply living, regardless of whether you are exercising or not. To find your net calorie burn (NCB), multiply 0.63 by your body weight in pounds. According to Runner's World, scientists consider the NCB to be the best way to calculate calories burned.
