Running is one of the most popular forms of exercise to keep fit. It is an exercise that people of any age can participate in, and it works several muscle groups at once. The right clothing and gear is key to a good running workout.
Instructions
1. Make yourself visible. Wear clothing that is brightly colored or light when running to ensure that motorists, bicyclists and other runners see you, whether you run late at night or early in the morning. Avoid colors like navy and black that cause you to blend in to the shadows or dark green shades that make you less distinguishable from trees and foliage.
2. Choose breathable fabric. Many manufacturers of athletic gear make garments made from blends of cotton and nylon or other synthetic fabrics that are specially designed to allow skin to breathe, air to pass through and to actually help pull perspiration away from the skin. Clothing made from these fabrics costs a little more, but the extra comfort when exercising is worth the investment.
3. Support everything that needs support. Some running gear for women comes with built-in bras which will offer more support and comfort than wearing a regular bra. If you have problems with weak ankles or hips, look for running clothes that give a little more support and compression in those areas.
4. Buy clothing that can be layered. Avoid wearing extra layers when running as this will not allow your skin to breathe and causes you to become overheated quickly. Opt for lightweight pieces that can be worn alone during the summer or when running inside or can be layered with other items for a little extra insulation when running outside or in colder temperatures.
5. Consider reflective pieces. Some running gear is made with reflective strips or patches to make runners more visible to motorists or when running at night. These reflective materials are also available separately and can be added to your running clothes.
6. Remember pockets. A small pocket will hold your house key, a cell phone or a small canister of pepper spray for safety. Some gear even has pockets or holders built in to hold a small bottle of water for runners who don't like holding things in their hands when they run. If you are running alone, consider finding running clothes with pockets to help keep you safe.
