Buy A Draft Horse

Drafts make great family members

The draft horse has a famously laid back personality and makes a great all around horse for the entire family to enjoy. Whether it's a lazy ride out on the trail, some arena work or time under harness driving through the countryside, if you buy a draft, you'll feel like you have a giant, sweet dog living out in your pasture. Drafts do eat a bit more than a regular sized horse and they need larger tack and horseshoes, if you choose to shoe. But they are worth all the super-sized equipment, because they bring a gentle attitude and a good, dependable work ethic.

Instructions

Buy a Draft Horse

1. Buy a bomb proof horse. Due to their size and especially if this is your first horse, you want to make sure you are buying a bomb proof horse. They cost a little more, but it will be money well spent. Check out horsetrader.com for available drafts (see Resources below).

2. Check out Draft Horse Classified online for some great draft prospects (see Resources below). Also look at www.DraftsForSale.com.

3. Check out Hay Dude Ranch. The owner can help you find the best Amish-trained draft or draft cross and she has many years of experience (see Resources below).

4. Check out United Pegasus. They rescue draft horses from farms in Canada and bring them to the US. The horses are sometimes trained, sometimes not, and the prices are low. The staff is very helpful and care about helping you find the right horse.

5. Try PMU Rescue. They list many horses of all ages and training levels.
