Calculate Percentages & Differences

Calculating percentages and differences is not difficult when a few simple steps are followed.

A percentage is a number out of 100. For instance, instead of saying it rained 10 out of 100 days, you can say it rained 10 percent of the time. It is commonly used as a way to compare quantities. Calculating differences simply means subtracting one quantity from another. It is not difficult to figure out either calculation if you follow a few simple steps.

Instructions

Compute the Difference

1. Identify two different values.

2. Determine the difference between two values. Subtract value 1 from value 2.

3. Walk through an example. For instance, if the two values are 4 and 10, then the difference is 10 - 4 = 6.

Computing Percentages

4. Identify two different values. They can be the same values as those used above, or you can use two different values.

5. Divide the smaller number by the larger number to calculate the percentage in decimal form.

6. Walk through an example. If the two values are 6 and 10, the calculation is 6/10, or 0.6. In general, percentages are calculated by dividing the part by the whole. In this case, 6 is the part and 10 is the whole.

7. Multiply by 100 for the percentage. The calculation is 0.6 x 100, or 60 percent.
